News Flash: Unless you’ve been living under a whopper, you’re aware of the mushrooming amount of evidence that indicates fruits and veggies are a vital component of any healthy diet. Last month, a study published in “The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition” showed that a high consumption of fruit and vegetables might be associated with a reduced risk of colorectal cancer, especially of colon cancer. A total of 452,755 subjects were studied over a period of 8 years.
NEWS FLASH: At the Agricultural Research Service (ARS) Western Human Nutrition Research Center in Calif., researches have discovered a compound found in fruits, vegetables, and spices that helps to fight harmful inflammation.
These compounds, called phytochemicals – the resveratrol in red wine or the catechins in green, white, and black teas – may reduce our risk of diseases associated with chronic inflammation, including cancer, atherosclerosis, and diabetes.
Researchers found that these phytochemicals can interfere with the normal flow of certain chemical signals or messages sent to and from cells involved in chronic inflammation.
