tea bags

Green tea guzzlers believe their “leafy greens” reduce the risk of prostate cancer and minimize the risk of diabetes. Jasmine teetotalers tout its ability to boost immunity and lower blood pressure. Some nutritionists swear by peppermint tea as a natural alternative to Pepto, as it’s thought to alleviate stomach problems. With all the research on tea, it’s hard to grapple which Snapple to snaffle!

However, a recent study on white tea’s ability to ward off wrinkles has got me racing to put the kettle on this morning. (If only it were as easy as using tea bags to get rid of my bags)! Oh and did I mention, it’s also been shown to reduce your risk of cancer and rheumatoid arthritis.

According to The Science Daily, researchers from Kingston University in England said study results showed white tea contains high levels of anti-oxidants, which could prevent cancer, heart disease, and aging. White tea is the uncured and unoxidized tea leaf – it’s the most unprocessed of all the teas.

Results indicated that white tea prevented the activity of enzymes involved in the breakdown of elastin and collagen – elastin supports the body’s natural elasticity, which helps lungs, arteries, ligaments and skin to function. It also helps body tissue to repair when you suffer wounds, and stops skin from sagging. Collagen is a protein found in connective tissues in the body and is also important for skin strength and elasticity.

Additionally, these enzymes (the ones implicated in destroying elastin and collagen) along with oxidants are associated with inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and cancer – so it follows that preventing their activity would help to inhibit these diseases.

Researchers were blown away by how well the white tea performed. It seems that just a small amount of white tea (less than you would find in a single cuppa) showed significant benefits. Good to know – I think I’ll have three cups this morning!
